How to convert pixels to inches (the formula)

The formula is simple: divide the pixel count by the DPI.

Inches = Pixels ÷ DPI

Example: a 3300×2550 pixel file at 300 DPI is 11×8.5 inches (3300÷300 = 11, 2550÷300 = 8.5).

To go the other way (inches to pixels), multiply instead: Pixels = Inches × DPI

Example: an 8×10 inch print at 300 DPI needs 2400×3000 pixels (8×300 = 2400, 10×300 = 3000).

What DPI should my print file be?

DPIQualityBest for
300 DPISharp, professionalAll Etsy prints, POD, home printing
150 DPIAcceptableLarge-format posters viewed from a distance
72–96 DPIScreen-onlyWeb graphics (will print blurry)

The most common mistake on Etsy is exporting from Canva without checking the canvas pixel dimensions. Canva shows DPI as 72 in some export dialogs, but the pixel dimensions are what determine actual print quality. A 3300×2550 pixel canvas at "72 DPI" still has enough pixels for an excellent 11×8.5 inch print at 300 DPI; the DPI tag in the file is just metadata.

Why does the DPI tag in my file say 72?

Many design apps, including Canva, Figma, and older versions of GIMP, save image files with a 72 DPI metadata tag by default. This does not mean your file will print at 72 DPI. What matters is the total number of pixels. If your file is large enough in pixels to cover the print size at 300 pixels per inch, it will print beautifully.

Use the calculator above to check: enter your pixel dimensions and see what size your file prints at 300 DPI. If the result is at least as large as your intended print size, your file is good.

Frequently asked questions

How many pixels is 1 inch at 300 DPI?

1 inch = 300 pixels at 300 DPI. So a 4×6 inch print needs 1200×1800 pixels, and an 8×10 inch print needs 2400×3000 pixels.

How do I convert pixels to inches for Etsy?

Divide width pixels by 300 for inches wide, and height pixels by 300 for inches tall. For example: 3300÷300 = 11 inches wide, 2550÷300 = 8.5 inches tall, which is standard Letter size.

What DPI should Etsy digital downloads be?

300 DPI is the standard for print-quality Etsy digital downloads. Files below 150 DPI at the intended print size will look blurry when printed.

How many pixels is 8×10 at 300 DPI?

An 8×10 inch print at 300 DPI requires 2400×3000 pixels (portrait orientation).

What is the difference between 300 DPI and 600 DPI?

300 DPI is the standard for all consumer and Etsy print products. 600 DPI doubles the resolution and is used for professional offset printing and fine art giclée prints. For Etsy sellers, 300 DPI is always sufficient.
